BMW X5 Oil Pump Problems And Solutions

The oil pump is the main component of the BMW X5 engine compartment, which lubricates the bearings, pistons, and crankshaft for their smooth functioning. It lubricates the engine parts properly while maintaining the pressure via the relief valve. It contains the pickup tube, which collects the oil from the oil pan and supplies it to filters.

BMW X5 oil pump problems include low oil pressure, failure of the oil pump, oil pressure warning light, engine parts wear and tear, noisy engine, stuck oil pumps, clogged filters, and high oil pressure.

Last Thursday, I was driving my X5 on the highways, and I suddenly felt a burning smell from my SUV. I ignored the smell and thought it could come from the surrounding vehicles on the road. However, the burning smell worsened, and the check engine light was illuminated on the screen.

I parked my SUV on the side of the road and popped the hood. I found that they overheat because of the insufficient presence of motor oil. I added the motor oil and started driving again to continue my journey.

Low oil pressure

The oil pump in BMW also maintains the pressure with a relief valve. Oil pressure maintenance is necessary for proper lubrication of engine parts. Sufficient pressure that builds inside the engine allows it to move everywhere for adequate lubrication of moving parts.

Sometimes, the pressure goes down because of mechanical and electrical failure, which causes issues. Pressure also decreases because of the failure of the relief valve.

In addition, you cannot maintain the correct pressure inside engine compartments because of oil leakage from the pan and damaged gaskets or seals. You can also face low-pressure issues because of the failure of a pump that cannot draw enough oil from the filters for lubrication.

The issue also comes because of the decreased oil level in the reservoir. You cannot maintain the pressure because of the low fluid levels. Clogged filters also restrict their flow toward the engine parts and decrease the optimal pressure. You can resolve the low-pressure issue by checking the oil levels and refilling it.

It is also necessary to inspect the leakages in several components. You can see caramel or tan color underneath your BMW X5 because of pan leakages.

Failure of the oil pump

Oil pumps in your SUVs are vulnerable to failure with their age and continuous use. The chances of their failure increase when you use low-quality oil.

Low-quality oil causes sludge accumulation on this electronically controlled pump and increases the chances of failure. Their gears can get stuck because of sludge accumulation and do not allow it to push the oil to the engine parts.

In addition, these are at risk of failure because of poor maintenance. Poor maintenance leads to contamination and failure of the pump.

The oil picks up the contaminants from the engine parts when moving between bearing sand crankshaft. It is necessary to maintain the oil and replace the contaminated ones with fresh ones.

You should also maintain the engine parts to decrease their contamination. Use high-quality engine oil to maintain their viscosity and reduce the chances of pump failure.

Oil pressure warning light

The oil pressure warning light comes on the dash screen when the engine has little or no oil. The engine contains a sensor that is connected to the pressure indicator to give correct information on the display screen.

Their levels decrease because of the failure of the pump, clogged filters, or damaged relief valve. Moreover, the warning light can also come on the screen because faulty sensors give incorrect information.

You can also see warning signs because of oil leakage. Contaminated oil also triggers the warning light on the screen to alert drivers.

Inspecting the leakages when a warning light is displayed on the cluster screen is necessary. Moreover, you should regularly change the oil because poor maintenance causes the light to come on.

Engine parts wear and tear

Oil pump failure also causes problems in engine parts because of the absence of sufficient lubricants. Wear and tear of bearings, crankshafts, and pistons also increases.

Motor oil also absorbs the heat that is generated because of moving parts. You can also face overheating issues in BMW X5 engine parts because of the increased friction. The low pressure increases the engine temperature, which can also increase the risk of failure of rubber seals and gaskets.

It is better to consult the mechanic to identify issues. You should replace the engine oil every one or two months, depending on driving conditions and the frequency of long journeys.

Noisy engine

Rubbing of metal parts produces grinding noise, which is irritating during driving and can also cause distractions for drivers.

A faulty oil pump makes the engine noisy because of insufficient lubrication. Moreover, you can also hear the noise because of damaged rubber seals and gaskets.

It is necessary to replace it when you face loud noise, overheating, and burning smell issues inside the hood of your X5.

Oil pump not running

The oil pump in your BMW X5 is electronically controlled, and it stopped functioning because of electrical faults. They receive power from your vehicle’s batteries to spray the oil and maintain its pressure inside the engine.

These can get stuck at the closed and off position because of sludge buildup and electrical faults. Sludge buildup comes from irregular maintenance and contaminated fuels.

However, electrical faults come because of dead batteries, damaged gears, and frayed electric wirings. Check the power supply from the batteries and inspect the frayed wirings.

Clogged filters

Oil pumps contain filters to remove the contaminants and protect the engine parts from damage. Chances of engine damage increase when these contaminants come in contact with metal or rubber parts.

The primary purpose of these filters is to keep the engine clean and increase its longevity. These filters can get clogged with time and their usage.

A clogged filter does not allow sufficient oil to flow, affecting pressure and lubrication. I also faced the issue because of clogged filters.

I did not know about their cleaning, and I thought to replace them. I called my friend, who told me I should clean these filters by dipping them in the dissolving solution.

Moreover, he told me you can also run the compressed air to remove the clogged particles.

High oil pressure

Many people face high oil pressure issues in their BMW X5 engine compartments. My friend also faced the same problem, and he told me that the indicator gauge was showing reading towards the high side.

He said high pressure means highly viscous oil cannot move between the engine parts. He felt the burning rubber-like smell from the hood.

He opened the hood to sort out the problem and found some metal parts dry. Dry parts were rubbing against each other and producing a burning smell.

Moreover, I experienced that oil pressure also increased because of the damaged relief valve.

You can face the problem because of a damaged pressure gauge sensor that gives incorrect readings to the oil pressure gauge. Pressure increases when oil collects debris and sludge over time and cannot move efficiently between engines.

It is necessary to quickly resolve the high-pressure issue because it can also cause lines to burst. You should replace the motor oil when it appears brownish or black in color and check the oil pump.

The brownish-black color indicates overheating, which can lead to sludge and contaminants buildup.
