Is there any restriction for freshmen to have cars in college?
Many colleges have discouraged freshmen from driving in their cars as they want to facilitate upperclassmen on a priority basis by providing a parking area.
In addition, they ask students to ask permission from the administration if they have any serious reason for using their own vehicle, like health problems or something else.
Sometimes, they can show some flexibility in their rules for students in case of a valid reason.
This restriction is imposed on many institutes in the US as they think seniors have the right to avail of the opportunity first, while a few of them allow first-year students to drive in cars.
In addition, I have faced several issues while using public transportation to cover the distance from school to home.
Probably, some of you have also received a denial from an administration to bring the vehicle to campus and recommended using public transport instead of personal vehicles.
Why colleges do not allow freshmen to have cars?
There are many reasons for discouraging students, particularly freshmen, for having their personal vehicles like it ensures their safety and keeps them within certain limits.
To avoid distraction
It is a distraction for students as they invest their time in moving in and out of the campus for doing some other sort of activities except studies.
Moreover, it is assumed that the presence of personal vehicles can reduce their dedication to coursework.
The outdoor activities fascinate young ones at college age, and they would never keep themselves bound to the classrooms when they have an opportunity to escape from a strict schedule.
This restriction is a good step by an administration, particularly for freshmen, as they are new to the environment and do not know how to manage studies and activities together.
In addition, some of the students lose their interest in studies due to such freedom and get involved in fun activities.
Availability of in-campus service
Many colleges facilitate their students with in-campus services to move from one part to another quickly, so they think there is no need for cars.
This service is mainly for first-year students to help them reach different corners of a college and explore different areas.
It increases their interest in remaining inside the campus because the service is limited to the campus. In addition, you can enjoy the free mode of transportation to move between campuses.
Likewise, Boston University provides a shuttle service for their workers and students that connect campuses, and only 5 to 6% of students have cars.
To make students independent
The educational institutions are meant to train students for an independent life.
Probably, you feel grown-up when you order a free transportation service to reach home or use public transport to move anywhere as it gives you the self-confidence to handle things.
They not only want to provide educational experiences but they are aimed at planning out-of-classroom experiences for you that help you better in adulting.
Moreover, these hands-on experiences help avoid the hassle of parking and teach you an idea of available resources, space, and time. It helps manage your day-to-day tasks in a better way.
Lack of parking area
There are different policies for freshmen to have personal vehicles in a building depending on the space for parking.
Almost all residential colleges allow students to use vehicles in the building as they have to live for 24 hours of the day. In addition, they have to go out to bring their food items and for shopping.
In addition, bigger institutes in the city have less space to facilitate their new students by providing a parking area, so they restrict them.
Princeton University in New Jersey provides a parking lot to the upperclassmen, as they have little space as a parking lot where only a specific number of cars can be parked.
To ensure security
The freshmen are not so mature to handle a vehicle on the road, so they do not allow them to have vehicles.
Moreover, they are unfamiliar with a new place, and driving is dangerous without knowing traffic patterns. Driving after drinking raises concerns for safety as it could lead to an accident.
The students living inside a campus can go outside to buy food to overcome late-night cravings.
There is more risk of mishaps due to lack of sleep as they usually sleep late at night. In addition, they have no experience and skills in driving, which can put them at risk of accidents.
After considering all these factors, colleges have restricted new students from driving their automobiles inside building.
To promote on-campus activities
They want you to participate in the curricular and co-curricular activities instead of spending time out of campus.
Moreover, they discourage students from having cars as they would spend time in their vehicles enjoying music, eating or drinking, and long drives.
It keeps them unaware of the affairs and activities related to their institute that would not help them in their personality grooming and learning ethics to coordinate in society.
To save parking fees and fuel cost
An administration asks you for registration if you want to have a car within the building, which requires a hefty fee. In addition, you have to pay almost $50 to $200 to get permission to park a vehicle.
In addition, some of the elite colleges can charge up to $1500 to $2000 to use parking spaces. Every student cannot afford the fee, so this restriction helps you to get rid of this hefty amount.
Moreover, it helps save the cost of fuel as you have to fill the tank daily to cover a few miles. However, the parking dues are added to the semester fee, which can burden your pocket.
So, this step benefits students as they can save money to utilize it for different purposes.
Should colleges allow freshmen to have cars?
Some students claim that colleges should allow them to have cars as they want to use their personal vehicles.
It wastes their time to get a bus or train present at a distance from their college and makes them feel tired after walking a long distance.
Moreover, they cannot ask their friends having cars to give them ride daily as it seems awkward. Some alternatives like carpooling or biking cannot be used daily and for long distances.
Do all colleges restrict freshmen from having cars?
Many colleges in America do not allow their freshmen to have cars except for those who can manage space for parking.
Moreover, Howard University and Ohio University have such restrictions for first-year students, but the latter considers the problem and permits students to have health issues.
In addition, the University of California and Lesley University do not allow first-year students to have cars, and only 2% to 6% of students have their vehicles.
Johns Hopkin University and the University of Wisconsin have strict rules for all students and do not allow them to have vehicles within a campus.
However, some of them allow students, as they know it is a basic right for each student, to have their desired conveyance and do not restrict them from having cars.
These include James Madison University, University of Iowa, Pen State University, etc.
Additionally, the University of North Carolina gives freedom of choice to students whether they want to have vehicles or use on-campus services.
What do college students say about this?
I surveyed 573 students who are residents of college or day scholars to know about the rules for their new students.
Out of 573 students, 396 students (69%) said their college does not allow freshmen to have cars because there is not enough space in the parking lot to facilitate them.
However, 131 students (23%) said they had faced no issues as freshmen with car parking because their college building is large enough with a good parking area.
While the remaining 46 students (8%) have said, this restriction on students makes them independent and improves their capabilities to overcome accidental risks.
Less space for parking in the big city colleges cannot facilitate all the students, so only upper-level students are allowed to use this area.
“I can understand the reason behind restriction when I looked at the parking lot, as it was not large enough to hold hundreds of cars.”
It is better to restrict freshmen as they do not know how to deal with cars in an emergency which can cause serious accidents.
“I have seen an accident at my campus when a car hit a boy, and he was badly injured.”
Car parking in colleges is not free of cost, and you have to get permission by paying fees.
“I was asked by administration whether I want to use my own car or campus shuttle to complete the registration process for the first option.”
