You can pull the bolt manually by holding it with your fingers. Also, you can use a screwdriver to pull all the connecting screws, which keeps the pulley in a stable condition.

For their removal, adjust the screwdriver on the screws and spin them anti-clockwise. However, you can keep the rotation slow because excessive force can damage the screws in their mounting holes.

In such circumstances, the removal of broken screws is challenging. However, after pulling the screws and bolts, you can proceed to the next step.

However, you should secure the removed screws because they are challenging to find in automotive stores. For this process, adjust the screws in the extra opening of the pulley.

You can search it and find about 2 to 4 additional holes. The screw adjustment can produce internal pressure in the steering pump and pulley system.

In their adjustment, you can insert the screw inside the extra hole and push it with minimum force. Then, you can tighten them with a high-performance screwdriver.

In such circumstances, the screws in the additional holes of the pulley produce extra pressure. Moreover, the pressure can flow inside the pulley and pushes it.

As a result, it removes from the mounting position due to internal pressure. In such conditions, you can pull and remove the pulley without a tool because the pressure is enough to loosen and detach it from the mounts.

The average cost of the procedure depends on the price of the wrench and screwdriver. However, you can select a wrench and screwdriver set for about $15 to $50, and the process consumes around 5 to 15 minutes. 

Why would you remove the power steering pump pulley without a tool?

Internal damages, strain, and heat can damage it, and you cannot drive a car with a faulty power pulley. However, due to the following problems, you can remove them with the screw pressure technique. 

Broken tensioner

A tensioner is part of a serpentine belt, and you can call it an idler pulley. The belt tensioner regulates the serpentine belts inside the car engine.

However, it can resist belt slippage and keep it in a specific position. In addition, due to its hydraulic and mechanical properties, it can regulate and maintain the serpentine belt.

But, it can break due to more use and internal tear. In addition, a spring-based tensioner can damage due to wrong installation and incorrect fitting.

The spring of the tensioner stretches due to incorrect handling and heat. As a result, it lacks internal tension and becomes ineffective in supporting the serpentine belt.

The belt failure can damage the pulley, which requires removal. 

Malfunctioning serpentine belt

A serpentine belt can malfunction due to excessive usage and pressure damage. Moreover, its incorrect fitting can cause a burning odor and smoke from the engine bay.

It reduces the power flow toward the pulley, which decreases its functionality. In addition, due to slippage, the belt falls off from the drive train and damages the pulley and steering pump malfunction.

You can feel vibrations while driving a car on an inclined surface. This is because belt slippage increases its internal temperature from the threshold.

Due to high heat levels, the bearing cracks and damages the seals of the steering pump. In such circumstances, the car engine can lose its response. Also, the engine cannot support the tires and brakes.

Pump damage due to strain

The excessive weight load and dirty lubrication fluids put additional strain on the steering pulley and its connected pump. Moreover, it cannot withstand excessive strain and break.

Due to the high strain, it undergoes premature failures and wears. Furthermore, you cannot use it and its pressure beyond the standard limitations.

However, increasing the pressure limits can put additional pressure on its valves. In such circumstances, the pulley breaks and produces loud cranking sounds when you turn the steering wheel in the left or right direction.

However, you can avoid this problem by maintaining the rotational limits of the steering wheel. As a result, the pressure stabilizes inside the pump, and the pulley works in standard operating ranges.

Why should you not use a hammer to remove the power steering pump?

A few people use a hammer to stroke the bolts and screws. Moreover, the hammer can loosen the pulley bolt due to constant striking.

You can use it when the bolt has corrosion around the upper corners. But, the hammer is dangerous for the power steering pump because it comprises built-in threads.

Due to its specific configuration, the pump and output passages have metric threads in the older car variants. The threads provide tightening of the pump screws and bolts.

However, the hammer can loosen the threads due to constant pressure. Moreover, it can break the threads, which reduces the pump efficiency.

You cannot use a hammer during the pulley removal because pressure can remove the thread from the mounting areas. Also, you cannot align the hammer strokes due to manual control.

The sudden stroke on the pulley can damage it by deforming its surface. As a result, it cannot perform due to its irregular shape.

Moreover, the sudden hammer stroke on the serpentine belt can cause its slippage. As a result, the belt can break from a specific portion and cannot regulate or run the pump and pulley.

In such conditions, the system malfunction, and you cannot use it without rebuilding or repair.
