Why is My GMC Terrain Leaking Oil?

Why is My GMC Terrain Leaking Oil?

Many people complain about GMC Terrain oil leakage problems. I have a 2020 GMC Terrain that undergoes leakage due to frequent drain plug damage.

Why is My GMC Terrain Leaking Oil? Your GMC Terrain can leak oil due to a damaged gasket, loose plug, oil pan cracking, improper filter adjustment, flow line corrosion, loose oil cap, and broken oil filter seal.

It is a compact SUV with all-wheel drive and a 1.5-liter engine with turbocharged characteristics. Its engine components undergo various damages, which cause the leakage of oil.

Causes Solutions
Damaged gasket Repair or replace the gasket
Loose plug Tighten the drain plug
Cracking of oil pan Repair or replace the oil pan
Improper filter adjustment Tighten or replace the filter
Corrosion in the flow line Clean the flow lines
Loose oil cap Tighten the cap
Broken seal of oil filter Replace the seal

Damaged gasket

Oil leakage is a significant problem on various models of GMC Terrain. You can find its drops under the SUV frame, which indicates the leaking issue.

The valves cover gasket damages and cause this problem. This gasket is a specific engine component that works as a sealing material between the cover of the valves and the engine.

It can protect oil inside these valves. Several people drive this SUV regularly.

Excessive use and several numbers of miles crack this gasket. The seal breakdown and cannot hold it within the valves.

It flows outside the valve, which indicates leaks. However, it is dangerous for the performance of other connected parts.

The ignition system loses its work efficiency. Its level reduces, which causes further damage to the gaskets and valves.

The engine cannot supply power to the ignition. As a result, you cannot start the SUV, which affects performance.

However, you can repair the broken and damaged areas with adhesive material. It can stop the leakage and make the seal stable.

The material does not cause surface clogging and keeps the engine stable. You can leave the engine for cooling.

You can pull the valve cover and remove the gasket from the mount. Then, you can add silicone to the surrounding area.

Also, you can adjust the valve cover with the new gasket. Finally, you can tighten the screws and bolts with a torque screwdriver.

Loose plug

The oil plug is a drain plug that comprises plastic or metal as its composition material. It has metallic rings to provide sealing. They can seal the draining section of the plug.

You can use this opening or hole to remove the waste and dirty oil during its replacement. You can find it underneath the frame of your SUV.

It is on the bottom side of the drain pan, and you can find it on the lower section of the engine. A few people leave the plug without tightening it.

It causes plug loosening, which leads to leakage. You can find lubricant on the driveway and garage floors.

It requires a specific torque and force for proper installation and tightening. You can adjust the particular torque range in the appropriate position.

The low or high torque force can affect the plug and causes leakage. However, you can fix it by tightening the plug with a wrench.

You can adjust it over the plug and rotate it clockwise for proper adjustment. In such circumstances, the leakage stops instantly.

Cracking of the oil pan

You can find the GMC Terrain oil pan on the lower edge of the engine. It is the container to store oil and connects with the motor through screws and bolts.

The pan pushes and circulates the lubricant in the different engine portions to provide maximum lubrication. In addition, it can reduce the engine heat and cools it.

An electric pump works with this pan and pushes it toward the filter for maximum cleaning. Then, it moves within the engine cylinders, pistons, and other moving parts.

The excessive debris accumulates inside it when you drive the SUV on a muddy road. The accumulated debris can cause cracks in it.

The holes and dents reduce their performance and cause oil leakage. However, you can repair it by draining the old lubricant.

Then, you can clean it with a degreaser. You can use a detergent for its cleaning.

Also, you can rub sandpaper over its surface and wipe the debris. You can apply the priming material over the surface and add adhesive material to fill the cracks.

You can replace the dented and damaged pan. You can pull the connected bolts with a screwdriver and remove them.

Also, you can pry off it from the built-in motor. You can clean its mounting area with cleaning agents.

Then, you can adjust the new pan and install a new gasket. You can tighten the bolts in the mounts through a torque wrench and stop the oil leakages.

Improper filter adjustment

The filter can clean the oil and removes the dirt and debris in the engine. In addition, the filter can remove metal parts, dust, and other deposits from it.

It improves the engine operation and stabilizes it at smooth rotations. However, it becomes loose if you do not adjust it properly, and lubricant leaks from the filter. In addition, the clogged and broken filters do not tight properly in their mounts.

You can tighten it to fix this problem. However, its replacement is better when the damages are severe.

You can approach the drain plug underneath the GMC Terrain. Opening the plug and removing the old and dirty lubricant is essential.

You can adjust the container or pan for collecting it. Then, you can change a screwdriver on its screws and loosen them.

Maintaining its upright angle is better for resisting spillage. However, you can pull it with your hands and remove it.

Applying greasing material on the O-rings is better for cleaning and lubrication. In addition, you can adjust the new filter in the mount.

Then, you can re-tighten the screws and stop unwanted leaks.

Corrosion in the flow line

The oil flows through specific passages and approaches the engine parts. The oxidation of metallic flow lines causes a build-up of corrosion.

It puts additional strain on these metallic pipes and breaks them. They undergo significant cracks, which lead to oil leakage on the GMC Terrain.

High oxygen and moisture react with metal and produces rust layers. Corrosion causes excessive oil leakage, which affects its standard level.

The storage container and connected flow lines undergo holes and dents. You can stop this by cleaning the corrosion layers from these flow lines.

You can use commercial cleaners to remove the rust. You can fix the holes and dents through the sealing material.

Apply the sealing substance on these flow lines and fill the cracks.

Loose oil cap

The oil filling section of the GMC Terrain engine has a specific opening. The manufacturing companies add a cap over this opening to resist the entry of dust particles and air.

You can remove it from the opening during the filling conditions. Heat and additional utilization can increase engine strain.

The motor puts excessive pressure on this filling cap. The pressure can break the cap, and it falls.

You cannot leave it loose during its installation because it leads to oil leaks. You can tighten the loose cap by rotating it manually, which stops leakage.

Also, you can replace the broken cap with a new and compatible option to resist its excessive outflow.

Broken seal of oil filter

The oil filter connects with the engine through housing. The housing comprises a filter seal to prevent oil leakages.

It is a rubber seal that makes a connection between the filter and housing. Excessive pressure and old age can break this seal which causes its leakage.

The improperly adjusted filter can break the seal because the connection remains loose. Its loose connection results in excessive vibrations, which leads to this issue.

The proper adjustment of the filter is dangerous. It can affect the seal and break it with time.

You can repair the seal by adding sealing material that stabilizes the connection. Moreover, you can replace the broken seal by removing it from the filter.

You can add a new seal and make its connection with the housing to avoid leakage.
