Many people run the engines of their semi-trucks while keeping them stationary for multiple hours. With a full gas tank, you can idle them for more than 1800 hours without modifying the limits of rotations per minute. 

How Long Can a Semi Truck Idle? A semi-truck can idle for 1875 hours with a tank of 150 gallons which is 7.4 to 7.5 days; its engine runs at 605 to 898 rotations per minute, consumes 0.8 gallons per sixty minutes, and idles for 3750 hours with 300-gallon tank. It reduces fuel consumption, warms the engine, and costs around $20.5 for 10 hours.

However, the time depends on the truck’s age and work efficiency. Its older variants cannot idle for several hours due to less efficient motors.

With a 150-gallon tank, they can idle for about 1875 hours. However, a few of them have a capacity of about 120 gallons. 

Similarly, a 120 tank provides inadequate idling hours. A few options have a reserve tank that stores an equal level of gas or fluid. 

In such circumstances, the tank capacity and idling time double the original values. With dual tanks, they can idle for around 3750 hours.

You can run the motor for about 7.4 to 7.5 days at low rotations. According to my research, a semi-truck can consume fuel of around 0.8 gallons in sixty minutes during these activities. 

The consumption rate depends on the efficiency of their power equipment and overall performance. 0.8 gallons is a minute quantity and affects the fuel economy due to the idling for several hours. 

However, the average cost of the procedure is about $18 to $20.5 for a ten-hours.

In these conditions, it has average charges of about $138 to $142 for one week. For a year, the procedure may cost you nearly $7250 to $7400 with regular driving and idling. 

The estimated rotations of semi-truck diesel motors are about 605 to 898 RPM. Below 605 RPM, they stall and lose the standard work efficiency. 

However, old age and damaged power equipment have a rate of around 1100 to 1195 rotations every minute. However, above 1195 indicate more fluid flow and higher consumption. 

Semi-trucks can maintain a running state for multiple hours without consuming excessive fluid. As a result, they get the correct heat with a constant electric supply to the electronic appliances of the passenger cabin.

Why do you idle a semi-truck for multiple hours?

It saves money, provides energy to rev the engine, and improves life expectancy. Due to the following reasons, you can idle your semi-trucks overnight. 

Less fuel consumption

The drivers believe that the engine consumes more fuel when they turn it off for a specific period and restart it. Leaving the equipment in running position at low rotations consumes a minimum amount of fuel. 

The 18-wheelers are large with massive tank capacities. During these activities, the fuel loss is negligible. To save fuel, you can idle them at the signals and on busy traffic roads. 

Warming the engine

You can use this technique to warm it during cold weather conditions. Furthermore, running equipment produces internal heat and protects the internal damage. 

You can leave it for idling when the environmental temperature falls below 14°F. Moreover, it prevents the gelling of crude lubrication oil because the diesel modifies at low-temperature conditions and causes damage.

Before driving in cold weather, always rev the power equipment through idling. Nevertheless, they have more strength than standard motors due to their powerful components. 

But, the low temperature affects the rotations and work efficiency of the built-in parts. You can regulate the procedure through smartphone applications and turn off the process after a specific time.

Before driving, warm the engine for around 3 to 4 minutes, provide heat and stabilize the truck.

Lubrication of different parts

It provides the time to warm the fuel and other lubrication oils inside the engine. Also, it promotes the flow of lubricant in the fluid passages and injectors. 

In colder conditions, it has minimum friction in the rotational parts. As a result, you can drive them safely on snowy and wet roads.

Due to adequate lubrication, the internal seals remain intact for a long time. Likewise, it withstands the effects of moisture on the metallic parts and resists rusting. 

Automatic control

The running engine produces sufficient pressure and compression for the air brake system. In such circumstances, it produces more compressed air and makes the brakes efficient.

Furthermore, the electric power flows to the different amenities of the cabin throughout the procedure. Therefore, it maintains the electric voltages and improves their life expectancy. 

With running equipment, the appliances have minimum effect on the battery. 

Protection from a cold start

A cold start can damage the diesel engine and its built-in components. To avoid cold starts, leave it running overnight. Moreover, consider the environment’s temperature because it can affect the procedure. 

It cools down during the night and absorbs enough heat. However, with no airflow on the radiator, it increases the internal temperature. 

Is it illegal to idle a semi-truck for multiple hours?

It is not illegal to idle your semi truck, and you can perform it on less populated grounds and in open-air locations. However, different states of the USA have variable laws for this producer to reduce excessive emissions. 

Violation of rules leads to massive penalties and fines. In Arizona, you can do it for around 4 to 5 minutes at road signals and to warm the motor.

In California, you can perform it for around 18 to 30 minutes near the marine ports to reduce environmental pollution. 

However, in New Jersey, you can do it for around 20 to 30 minutes when the semi-truck stops for three hours in one position.
