Hyundai Palisade Transmission Problems

Hyundai Palisade is a full-size SUV that accommodates 7 to 8 passengers. Moreover, it has an 8-speed automatic transmission. However, this transmission system has several problems that can make gear shifting challenging.

Hyundai Palisade transmission problems include gear slipping, stuck gear, hard shifting, delayed shifting, uneven noises, and excessive vibrations.

Last week, I also faced an issue when I tried to shift the transmission from parking to driving. The gear system became irresponsive and stuck in parking mode. The problem came from the faulty gearbox, which could not take power from the engine parts. I contacted the dealership for gearbox replacement.

Gear slipping

Transmission slipping means erratic gear changes during shifting. It means the gears start to engage on their own without pressing the shifter switch or manual paddle.

In addition, it shows that your SUV does not remain in the selected gears. It moves towards the neutral or park without pressing its respective switch.

Moreover, your vehicles do not fully remain in the selected gear. The problem can come because of worn-out clutch pedals. You can also manually adjust the 8-speed transmission in the Hyundai Palisade so worn-out clutches cause gears to slip.

Worn-out clutches cannot control the transmission system functioning while gear shifting. It allows the smooth disengagement of gears without producing grinding noises.

It also disengages the engine from the transmission parts according to the selected gear. These can wear out because of the damaged steel plates.

Harsh driving conditions and frequent shifting increase their risk of wear and tear. Furthermore, the worn-out transmission band is the significant cause of gear slipping.

These are metal bands that are connected with gears. Broken metal bands do not allow the particular gear to engage.

My friend also faced the gear slipping issue while driving on the road. He told me an issue in his vehicle came because of the failure of the solenoid. The solenoid is the component that adjusts the transmission fluid.

High transmission fluid levels in the system increase the chances of gear slipping and erratic shifting. My friend replaced the failed solenoid with the new one.

Stuck gear

Sometimes, the gears of your Hyundai Palisade get stuck in the park and driving mode. You cannot change the gear smoothly while pressing the shifter knob switches or clutches in manual transmission.

It can also affect the driving conditions and safety while driving on different terrains. Moreover, you should avoid pressing the pedal or switches frequently when gears are not shifting because it can cause complete failure of the components.

You cannot get out of the parking gear because of a faulty brake light switch. The small sensor is located on the brake pedal and does not allow you to start your SUV when the brake pedal is not properly depressed.

Sometimes, the sensor becomes faulty, and you cannot come out of the parking gear after pressing the pedal. You cannot shift the gears up and down because of the stuck shifter solenoid. Gears can also stick because of old and contaminated transmission fluid.

In addition, the issue also comes because of the activation of limp mode. It is necessary for you to deactivate the limp mode and check the various components of your vehicle that cause their activation. You can also replace the shifter solenoid to fix the issue.

Hard shifting

Hard shifting means you need more effort while shifting the up and down gears. As a result, you can hear the grinding and clicking noise.

The hard shifting issue arises because of low levels of transmission fluid. Fluid level decreases because of the high mileage of your vehicles.

You have to add more fluid according to the driving conditions and certain mileage of your SUV. Low levels of fluid also increase the friction between components.

Fluid levels become low because of leakages from the damaged components. You can see bright red and transparent fluid under your Hyundai Palisade, which shows leaking fluid.

The problem also comes because of broken gaskets and loose bolts. Increased friction causes hard shifting because of poor lubrication of several parts. You can also face rough shifting issues because of faulty sensors.

These sensors are connected to your vehicle’s computer system, allowing gears to engage and disengage.

You should ensure that pan bolts are properly tightened. You can also replace the broken gaskets with new ones of good quality.

Delayed shifting

Many people complain about the missing gear and delayed shifting problems in their transmission system. It means you need more time than optimal to shift the various gears.

Moreover, sometimes, you cannot engage the respective gear. Many drivers face this issue when they engage the drive gear to move forward.

Typically, the lag comes because of an interrupted power supply from the engine to the transmission components. It usually happens because of the high mileage of the Hyundai Palisade.

People with old SUVs face this issue more frequently. In addition, you can also face delayed shifting problems because of poor vehicle maintenance.

Weather conditions also affect the several components. My neighbor was sitting with me last night and told me he usually faces delayed shifting issues in winter.

He did not face any issues during warm weather. Cold weather affects the viscosity of the transmission fluid and hardening of seals.

The shifter solenoid is a small electromagnetic coil that allows smooth gear shifting. They fail to perform their functioning because of excessive vibrations.

Moreover, overheating can also cause the electromagnetic coils to fail. Contaminated fluid does not lubricate the bands and seals of the transmission system properly, which increases their risk of wear and tear.

It is better to select indoor parking areas during winter to decrease their freezing issue. In addition, you should also perform routine maintenance and replace the fluid after every 50,000 miles for lubrication of seals and bands.

Uneven noises

I also faced uneven noises in my Hyundai Palisade during gear shifting. I heard the low-frequency buzzing sound, but I ignored it at first. I thought that it was coming from the radio devices.

The noise became more prominent when I kept driving my SUV. I called my friend, who is an expert mechanic, and he advised me to check the transmission fluid levels.

I checked the levels, but those were maximum, and I called him again. He told me to check the internal seals because low-frequency buzzing noise can also come from the broken seals.

I inspected the seals, and those were poorly damaged. I replaced the worn-out seals with the new ones to get rid of the irritating noise during driving.

However, you can hear grinding, humming, and clicking noises because of hard shifting and low fluid levels. Air bubbles in transmission lines also increase the risk of noise production. You can bleed the system to remove the air bubbles.

Excessive vibrations

Many Hyundai Palisade owners complain that they face excessive vibrations during gear shifting. The issue comes because of low levels of fluid, which cause harsh shifting.

In addition, it becomes shaky because of worn-out gearbox components. A faulty computer system also causes the gears to vibrate during their engagement.

You can fix it by changing the gearbox with a new one. However, you have to call the mechanic to inspect the computer system because it is a complex system with multiple components.

Burning smell

You can feel the burning smell from the Hyundai Palisade because of contaminated and overheated transmission fluid. However, old and dirty fluids are more vulnerable to overheating.

Fluid can be contaminated when metal shavings from the metal parts are exposed to this lubricant. It can also occur because of overheating of parts.

You can face the problem because of worn-out clutch pedals. Water intrusion also contaminates the lubricant, and you can feel a strange smell during driving.

You can decrease the risk of contamination by avoiding driving over the water puddles. It is better to flush the fluid after 50,000 miles to reduce overheating chances.
