Tesla Model S Backup Camera Not Working

Tesla Model S is equipped with the latest safety feature for safe driving. It contains a backup camera connected to the front screen to provide the rear view while parking and reversing your vehicle.

Tesla Model S backup camera stops working due to dust, moisture, and mud droplets on the lens. The problem also comes due to a blown-out fuse, frequent opening and closing of the trunk, outdated software, interference of USB devices, and condensation on the lens. In addition, you cannot see a clear image due to physical and mechanical damage to the backup camera parts and low battery charging.

The installation of this feature reduces the accidental risk during reversing and decreases the chances of hitting.

However, it is necessary to check the charging of the batteries before driving these electric cars because the camera cannot process the signals if the battery is low.

Dirt on the backup camera

The location of the reverse cameras makes them more vulnerable to dust or mud from the road. These are present closer to the ground and easily catch dust from the road surfaces during driving at a fast speed.

Driving cars on poor and dirty roads increases the risk of dirt accumulation.

The dust accumulation blurs the images on the front screen, and you cannot see the clear picture of the back view on the dashboard screen.

You cannot see the clear image on the screen because of small spots of mud that comes due to driving on muddy roads during rainy days.

Mud splashes on the lower parts of vehicles are the most common issue during rainy days. Therefore, it is necessary to fix the problem to see a clear backward view.

You can keep the lens of the reverse camera clean by using a soft and lint-free microfiber cloth. Spray the little amount of isopropyl alcohol on the lens and then wipe it off with a soft cloth.

You should clean it after returning home after every 3 to 4 days.

Blown fuse

Many people complain that suddenly the front screen becomes black and white during driving. However, sudden changes can increase the risk of accidents and make drivers worry during driving.

The screen is the electrical component and needs a power supply to perform its function. The blown-out fuse and its loose connections cannot supply enough power to these electrical accessories.

The fuse in the Tesla Model S blows out because of its frequent use and age. However, you can fix the issue by tracing the connectivity of the fuses.

Locate the fuse box in these cars to check their functioning. You can find them in the front trunk’s maintenance panel and check the backup camera’s fuse.

Replace the old and blown-out fuse with a new one that can control the electric current and supply the correct voltage.

Damaged wires 

The reverse cameras in the Tesla Model S are connected to the dashboard screen through wires. These wires are located along the length of the trunk.

The frequent opening and closing of the trunk for placement of luggage cause damage to these cables.

The damaged or frayed electric wires cannot supply proper signals to the dashboard screen. As a result, you can see the flickering on the screen due to an interruption in signaling.

Moreover, children also open and close the trunk lid frequently for fun. As a result, it can damage the wires of the reverse camera.

The company resolved the issue in various models of model S by coating its wire with a plastic insulation layer.

The plastic coating provides an extra protective layer and decreases the chances of their breakage.

Interference due to USB devices

Many people connect their phones to their Tesla Model S using USB cables or ports. The phone’s connection with the onboard computer system overloads the system, and you can see a delay in the video.

The video gets stuck on the screen, and you cannot see it continuously. The USB ports also contain a lot of data, including music, video games, and TV shows.

The issue comes when you attach this USB port to your Tesla vehicles. The computerized system cannot process the information because of the overloaded data of USB ports and connected mobile phones.

You can resolve the issue by removing all connected devices from your car to decrease interruption in information processing.

Detach the USB ports and phones to reduce the risk of interference. It is also necessary to reboot the system after disconnecting these devices.

Press and hold the button present on the steering wheel for a few seconds. You can see that screen becomes black because of the rebooting procedure.

Software issues 

Many people face backup camera issues due to faulty or outdated software. In addition, the bugs present in the specific software also cause processing issues.

You can see the delay in a video on your dashboard screen. However, the video stops suddenly, and you cannot see the clear image on the front screen.

The outdated software also causes video lagging when you reverse your Tesla car. Therefore, it is necessary to update the software when you get the update notification.

You should always check the new update for a better driving experience. It is also better to reboot the system to remove the bugs if the software is updated.

You have to completely power off your vehicle for rebooting procedure. Take your foot from the brake pedal and open the service menu on the dashboard screen.

Click on the power off option, and you can see all system gets turned off, including interior lights. Wait for a few minutes to completely shut down all the systems.

Press the brake pedal after 4 to 5 minutes to restart the car.

Poor Internet connectivity 

In some models of Tesla cars, the backup camera is connected to the front screen through Wi-Fi or internet connectivity. 

You can face a video delay issue due to poor internet connectivity. 

Moreover, the problem also comes when you are driving in rural areas. The faulty internet connections are also problematic, and you can see the black and white lines on the screen after putting your vehicle in reverse.

You should check the internet connections after seeing white and black lines during driving.

Condensation on the lens 

The condensation on the lens of the backup camera decreases the visibility, and you cannot see the clear picture on your front screen for safe parking and reversing.

The primary cause of condensation is a change in external and internal temperature. The condensation or dew drops come on the lens when the temperature outside is high and the inside is low.

The moisture also affects the electrical components, including the sensor of the backup camera, and makes them faulty.

You can remove the moisture from internal components using silica gel. Furthermore, you can also open its parts to remove moisture.

Damaged parts

The physical or mechanical damage to this device also causes an interruption in its functioning. These devices are located on the lower end and near the wheels.

The lens of these cameras is close to the ground and at greater risk of damage. Stones from the road can easily hit their surface and break the lens.

You can see the intermediate black lines on the screen due to the broken lens. Therefore, you should inspect its parts after seeing the black lines.

Installing the new backup camera in Tesla Model S is the only solution for safe driving because you cannot repair its damaged parts.
