What Kind of Oil Does GMC Sierra Take?

Here are different types of oil that you can use in your GMC Sierra. If you are planning to buy a new GMC truck, you should its oil requirements.

What Kind of Oil Does GMC Sierra Take? Almost all the models of GMC Sierra use full synthetic oil in the engine. Each model has a different capacity of oil depending upon the number of engines present. You cannot use conventional oil in GMC Sierra.

What Kind of Oil Does GMC Sierra Take?

You should use full synthetic oil in GMC Sierra that contains 100% distilled purified non-conventional high-performance fluid. It contains high-quality base oil or sometimes crude oil as a base. But it also has various additives, and its extraction process is different from the conventional oil.

The additives and extraction process makes it a high-performance product with lesser impurities. It contains a carrier oil to distribute the additives in it. It effectively lubricates all the engine parts and maintains the fluid viscosity at extreme temperatures.

Advantages of full synthetic oil for GMC Sierra

There are various advantages of 100% synthetic oil to enhance the performance of trucks. It plays an essential role in the protection of all engine parts. It is a high-performance truck, and it moves fast.

Its engine part comes in contact with each other frequently. This oil protects the wearing down of parts of the engine.

It is the purest oil and does not contain any impurities in it. There are lesser chances of deposition of impurities on the inner parts of the engine.

It increases the efficiency of trucks by many folds. It also prevents all the dirt and debris from accumulating in the engine.

It also provides sufficient lubrication to all parts and reduces friction between them. Thus enabling it to move smoothly over rough and rocky roads.

In extreme temperature, its viscosity remains stable and flows quickly in it. Its molecules are tailored in such a design that it last longer than other lubricants.

Which oil you can not use in GMC Sierra?

We usually use conventional crude oil in other trucks but, it is not feasible for GMC Sierra. It is a mineral or in a crude form with a lot of impurities.

Its extraction process is different from synthetic oil. Conventional oil is also available in the blended form with synthetic oil. It has some level of purity but still unfit for GMC. Both can cause damage to the engine over a long period so, you can not use them in a heavy-duty truck.

It is less stable and becomes thick in winters and thin in hot weather. Its molecules can break easily in extreme temperatures and lose all properties.

It can oxidize and acidify easily, replace it frequently to avoid any damage. Conventional oil contains different impurities that result in sludge formation on the inner parts of the engine. It does not protect against the wear and tear of the engine.

Oil type and capacities of different GMC Sierra model

Each model of GMC Sierra has different capacities for engine oil. Here is a brief description of all of them.

2018 GMC Sierra 1500 oil type

It has three engines and uses 100% synthetic oil in all of them. The 4.3l v6 engine has a capacity of 6 quarts. It uses SAE 5W 30 synthetic oil 5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 both use SAE 0W-20 oil and have 8 quarts capacity.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 oil type

It has four engines, and all of them require full synthetic oil. The 2.7l 4 engine uses 0W-30 oil, has a capacity of 6 quarts. The 4.6l v6 engine uses 5w-30 oil and has a capacity of six quarts. Both 5.3l v8 and 6.2l v8 use 0W-20 and have 8 quarts capacity.

2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Oil Type

It also has three engines and uses 100% synthetic oil. The v6 4.3l engine has 6 quarts capacity and uses 5w-30 oil. Both 6.2l and 5.0l have eight quarts capacity and use 0W-20 oil.

2008 GMC Sierra

It contains four engines; all require synthetic oil. The 4.3l v6 engine has 5 4 to 5 quarts of capacity. The 4.8l v8 has a capacity of 5.7 quarts. You can add 5w-30 in the 4.3l v6 engine and 0w-30 in the other three engines.

Different brands of full synthetic oil for GMC Sierra

You can purchase full synthetic oil depending on your budget. Many manufacturers manufacture it in different strengths and viscosities. Here is a list of these brands.

  • Mobil 1 extended performance full synthetic oil
  • Mobil 1 high mileage synthetic oil
  • Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic oil
  • ACDelco dexos1 full synthetic oil
  • Valvoline synpower full synthetic oil

Checking the oil level in the engine

All GMC Sierra trucks have an engine oil system to monitor engine speed temperature and operating conditions. This system has lights to indicate when it is time to change the oil. Whenever the oil level is down white light turns on immediately.

OLS system does not indicate oil change warning before six months and a year. It is better to check the oil level manually.

You can also manually check the oil level in these trucks. Turn off the vehicle for thirty minutes and locate the dipstick. Remove it and clean it with paper and place it back in the engine. Wait for a few seconds, remove it and read min and max lines on it. When its level is below the max, it’s time to refill the engine.

How often to change the oil in GMC Sierra?

Full synthetic oil can last longer than other oils. It depends upon the type of vehicle and the brand of synthetic oil you are using in it. You should check the user manual to get information about oil change intervals.

Typically some models need to change oil every 3000 to 5000 miles. Some brands of synthetic oil can last up to 10000 miles.

It depends upon your driving style and speed. You should change the oil in the engine from conventional to synthetic without worries. But when you switch it, change the oil more frequently.
