You can replace many parts and systems between different model years and trim levels, but mostly you should expect it to remain the same within a generation.

Ford Focus interchangeable parts

Ford Focus is a compact passenger car from 2000-2018 models in the US market. It has 3 generations from 2000-2007, 2008-2011, and 2012-2018, with some mid-year upgrades and facelifts.

Suspension components

Suspension components include upper and lower control arms, stabilizer bars, springs, coils, and struts, to name a few.

Some parts like upper and lower control arms and stabilizer bars remain the same for the 2000-2004, 2005-2007, 2008-2011, and 2012-2018 models, and you can swap them.

At the same time, other parts like struts, springs, and coil overs can have varying dimensions and spring rates.

However, you can replace them for the 2000-2005, 2006-2007, 2008-2011, and 2012-2015 models.

For example, Ford Focus SVT has the same spindles for 2002-2004, 2005, and 2006 variants, while for all other variants, you can swap them for 2000-2004, 2005, 2006, and 2013-2014 versions.

Engine

You can swap the 2.0-liter I4 engine parts, including cylinder head for 2000-2001, 2002, 2003-2004, cylinder block and oil pan for 2000-2002, 2003-2004 for DOHC and 2000-2004 for SOHC, engine assembly for 2000-2002 and 2003-2004 models.

The exhaust and intake manifold are the same for 2000-2001, 2002, and 2003-2004 for DOHC and 2000-2004 for SOHC variants.

The starter motor is also interchangeable for the 2000-2002 and 2003-2004 models, compatible with automatic and manual transmission.

For other parts like the timing cover, flex plate, and fuel injector, you should go by matching their part numbers.

Another variant of Duratec 2.0-liter I4 has most of the parts interchangeable for 2005-2007 versions with modifications in a few features like exhaust manifold.

Similarly, a high-power variant of the 2.3-liter Duratec I4 engine has interchangeable parts for the 2005-2007 Ford Focus ST.

Furthermore, the 2008-2011 model Ford Focus also has a 2.0-liter Duratec I4 engine, and you can replace them with slight modifications in the exhaust manifold.

For 3rd generation Ford Focus, you can swap the 2.0-liter Duratec Ti-VCT I4 engine in 2012-onwards models.

However, you should ensure its variant matching and compatibility with the turbocharger, flex fuel, and other minor modifications.

For the 2016-2018 models, 2.3-liter Ecoboost with a turbocharger is interchangeable for RS trim levels. 1.0-liter turbocharged Ecoboost I3 engine is compatible with 2015-2018 models for SE trim level.

Transmission system

It is a best practice to swap the transmission from the same model year and engine option to avoid any problem due to minor upgrades introduced by the manufacturer each year. However, there are some same motors and transmissions between different variants.

You can swap the MTX75 5-speed manual transmission between 2000-2002 models with the 2.0-liter Zetec I4 engine.

The 4-speed automatic transmission compatible with 2.0-liter Duratec I4 engines is compatible with 2000-2002 and 2003 variants.

Moreover, the SVT variant of the car has a 6-speed manual transmission, and you can swap between them.

4-speed automatic transmission 4F27E compatible with 2.0-liter and 2.3-liter Duratec I4 engines is interchangeable for 2004-2007 variants with same engine variants only due to a difference in their gear ratios.

DPS6 transmission is the same for the 2012-2018 versions. However, the transmission control module (TCM) differs for the 2012-2016 and 2017-2018 models. Therefore, you can swap it within these options only.

Brake parts

Brake parts including the master cylinder are interchangeable for 2000-2008, 2009, 2010-2011 and 2012-2018 variants, calipers for rear brakes for 2000-2005, 2006-2007, 2008-2011, 2012-2016, 2017-2018 and 2002-2004, 2005-2007, 2008-2011, 2012, 2013-2016, 2017-2018 for front brakes for both SVT and non-SVT models.

Front brake rotors, hub, and drum are the same for 2000-2004, 2005-2007, 2008-2011, 2012, and 2013-2018 according to the installed wheel size on your car.

Moreover, some high-level trim levels have disc brakes instead of drum ones, and you can convert between the two types.

However, Ford still uses the drum brakes because they are relatively low priced and easy to maintain due to fewer mechanical parts.

Lights

You can replace the front lamp for 2000-2004, 2005-2007, 2008-2011, and 2012-2018 model Ford Focus while the Fog lamp is compatible with bumper assembly.

However, headlamp assembly can vary according to its fitting and wiring for its different components with a change in generation or facelift introduced by the manufacturer.

You can swap it for 2002-2004, 2005-2007, 2008-2011, 2012-2014, and 2015-2018 models. You can replace taillights for the 2002-2007, 2008-2011, 2012-2014, and 2015-2018 models.

They have the same bulb and holders to reduce costs for LED tail lights. You can expect variations for different trim levels with changes in their rear end.

Seats

You can swap the front seats in 2000-2007 and 2008, 2009 model Ford Focus with coupe body style. SVT and ST trim levels have the best seats, and you can swap them in other trim levels by modifying the wiring for airbags, seat belts, and weight sensors.

You can mostly swap them within the same generation variants and body styles. For example, there is a difference in seat dimensions for a hatchback, sedan, and coupe body styles.

The same is also the case for 3-door and 5-door variants of the car. Considering the above, you can replace the better seating options from advanced models and trim levels with leather upholstery instead of regular clothes by matching their mounting brackets.

Bumpers

Front bumpers are similar for all mk1 Ford Focus models from 2000-2004, with exceptions to SVT variants.

While rear bumpers are specific for body style, you can interchange within ZX3/ZX5, wagon, SVT, and sedans only.

The front bumper assembly also works with 2006-2007, 2008-2011, 2012-2014, and 2015-2018 versions.

However, you can swap between specific body styles only that is sedan and coupe. In addition, rear bumper assembly is interchangeable for the 2009-2010, 2011, 2012-2014, 2015-2016, and 2017-2018 Ford Focus variants.

Body parts

Body parts mostly remain the same within a generation of the car until the manufacturer introduces an upgrade or body style or trim level changes.

For example, front-end body parts, including hood, bumper, and fenders, are interchangeable for 2000-2004 and 2005-2007 models. Similarly, the rear end differs for all mk1 and mk1.5 model years.

However, you can swap door panels for 2000-2007 models with the same body styles and the number of doors.

Furthermore, for higher generation models, you can interchange quarter panel assembly for 2008-2010, 2011, 2012-2015, and 2016-2018 models, roof assembly for 2008-2010, 2011, 2012-2014, 2015-2016, and 2017-2018 versions and side view mirrors for 2008-2011, 2012-2014, and 2015-2018 models.

Other body parts like hood and windshield are similar for 2008-2011, 2012-2014, and 2015-2018 models, grille for 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012-2018 models, and fender for 2008-2009, 2010-2011, and 2012-2018.

Moreover, door assembly is compatible for 2008-2009, 2010, 2011, 2012-2014, and 2015-2018 variants, decklid tailgate 2008-2009, 2010-2011, 2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016, and 2017-2018 with few changes.

Besides physical dimensions, you should also have to cater for electrical parts, airbags in the roof, and sensors for windscreen glass.

Axles

The axle shaft is compatible in the 2000-2001 and 2002-2003, 2004, and 2005 Ford Focus with MTX75 manual transmission and 2000-2004 and 2005 models with IB5 manual and 4F27E automatic transmission.

Moreover, you can also interchange it for the 2006-2011 models of the car with both automatic and manual transmission systems.

You can replace axles between the 2012-2015 models of Ford Focus Electric with the 4-door hatchback body style and the 2012-2018 variants for sedan 4-door design.

Ford has also introduced a limited-slip differential in the 2013-2018 model of the car with ST and RS trim levels.

Heater and AC components

The temperature control system is a compulsory part of Ford Focus, containing an air conditioner for cooling and a heater core/element for heating purposes.

AC compressor works with 2000-2002, 2003-2004, 2005-2007, 2008-2011, 2012-2015 and 2016-2018 models, its condenser for 2000-2004, 2005, 2006-2007, 2008-2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015-2018 and evaporator for 2000-2007, 2008-2011, 2012-2014, 2015-2016 and 2017-2018.

The heater core is swappable for 2000-2007, 2008-2011, 2012-2014, and 2015-2018 models.

The temperature control system inside the cabin is compatible with 2000-2001, 2002-2004, 2005-2007, 2008-2009, and 2010-2011 versions with heated seats and 2008-2011 models without heated seats.

Moreover, the automatic temperature control dual zone is compatible with the Ford Focus’s 2013-2014 and 2015-2018 variants.

It is pertinent to remember that the compressor links with the car’s engine for its operation.

Fuel pump

There is also a difference in non SVT and SVT cars because of different flow rates, mounting assembly, and sender unit.

You can swap the fuel pump for 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003-2004, 2005-2007, 2009-2011, 2012-2014 and 2015-2018 cars.

Fuel tanks also remain the same during these years. However, when swapping across different trim levels, engines, or body styles, you should confirm its fitment before buying.

When did Ford Focus get a facelift?

This car entered the US automobile market in 2000, later than its launch in the European market. It got its first facelift in 2005 with upgrades in its exterior styling and interior parts.

Next, the manufacturer introduced a new car design in 2008 with a coupe body style and other features like ABS and stability control.

Its 3rd generation is available in the US market since 2012 with a complete redesign, fresh looks, elegant body shape, and hatchback body style.

Moreover, it received its last facelift in 2015 with slight changes in its styling and a new engine option. You should follow this timeline while looking for compatible parts between different Ford Focus models.

What parts are interchangeable between Ford Focus MK1, MK2, and MK3?

There are 3 generations of Ford Focus available in the American market, known as MK1, MK2, and MK3, with 2 mid-generation upgrades.

Most of its parts are interchangeable within the same generation models before the introduction of any improvement or facelift.

However, you can replace a few components by doing some modifications across the generations.

For example, you can swap the complete front end between the 2000-2004 and 2005-2007 models. Similarly, a few engine options like 2.0 Duratec I4 are common in MK1 and MK2, and you can swap them with some modifications.

To make the swap feasible, you can replace some of its parts while retaining the others from the original one. Wheels are also interchangeable between MK1, MK2, and MK3 variants.

Is stock turbo interchangeable between Ford Focus ST and RS trim levels?

Ford Focus ST trim level has a turbocharger available with a 2.0-liter Ecoboost I4 engine. Similarly, introduced in 2016, the RS variant is also available with a turbocharged 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine.

The ST turbocharger is compatible with the RS engine. You can install an RS engine in your ST car, which will work fine with a few modifications for sensors and ECU, as both have different compression ratios.

Moreover, you can swap the turbocharger from RS to ST, which will work fine but with limited capabilities.

You have to reinstall sensors, ABS module, heat shield, oil lines, gasket, and ECU reprogram to utilize its full power range.

What parts are interchangeable between different body styles of Ford Focus?

This Ford car is available in sedan, hatchback, and wagon body styles from 2000-2004, coupe and sedan from 2008-2011, and coupe, sedan, and hatchback body styles from 2012-2018.
