Many people ask about the location of the variable geometry turbocharger solenoid (VGT) on their 6.0-liter Powerstroke. A bearing bracket/housing covers and protect it from external failures.

6.0-liter Powerstroke is a diesel engine. It is a V8 and produces a horsepower of 324 hp. 

Ford Motor Company launched this engine in Ford Super duty trucks. Ford E-series comprise this high-performance engine. 

Ford used 6.0L Powerstroke till 2007 super duty pickup trucks. It has eight cylinders and facilitates stable efficiency for several years. 

However, this diesel engine has a variable geometry turbocharger solenoid (VGT). In addition, it has an exhaust gas reticulation (EGR) system with technologically advanced fuel injectors. 

VGT solenoid of the 6.0-liter Powerstroke protrudes from the housing of the turbocharger. However, it is the central portion of this housing. 

The variable geometry turbocharger solenoid can protrude the bearing assembly of the built-in turbocharger of the engine.

A specific bracket holds it in a particular position. It has a bolt called a retainer screw. 

Furthermore, the retainer bolt can fix it beyond the turbocharger and bearing housing of the engine. It is visible on the outer side of the bearing assembly.

It can move inside the bearing of the turbine. It is a metallic round shape valve. Many people unplug this just for fun.

Inspection due to codes

The variable geometry turbocharger solenoid (VGT) malfunctions, and different codes appear on the scanner. However, the primary indication of its failure is reduced speed. 

The engine boost decreases, and throttle response varies. In such circumstances, you can identify the P0299 code on the scanner, which requires the replacement of this solenoid. 

Furthermore, this code indicates low performance and decreased turbocharger output. The truck’s electronic control module has a sensor that identifies its failures and triggers P0299.

The P2262 code shows the damages of the turbo of 6.0 Powerstroke. The broken turbo requires replacement because it has reduced efficiency. 

The low boost of this engine reduces the efficiency and stability of the engine and truck. Moreover, it shows the malfunctioning of its vanes. 

They are grooves that can move at their standard efficiency level. However, they stop in one position despite internal power flow and cause P2262.

P0046 is another code that indicates the malfunctioning boost regulation and damaged sensor of the built-in turbocharger.

Maintaining solenoid to PCM

The Powertrain control module regulates the 6.0-liter diesel Powerstroke V8. However, the built-in sensors of the PCM control the VGT solenoid electrically. 

Then, it regulates oil flow and its pressure. It controls the pistons and internal vanes of this diesel engine. 

The malfunctioning solenoid cannot connect to the truck PCM. It malfunctions and cannot respond to signals. 

In such circumstances, you can find it inside the diesel engine and stabilize its connection with the Powertrain control module of the pickup truck.

What is the method to replace the VGT solenoid on a 6.0 Powerstroke?

You can replace the malfunctioning and failed variable geometry turbocharger solenoid on the diesel 6.0-liter Powerstroke engine of the trucks. 

However, inspect its resistance and change the malfunctioning solenoid. The lower resistance is dangerous and changes the position performance and vanes malfunctions.

Professional mechanics can change it with expertise and provide reliable results.

Turn off the battery power flow and remove its cords and terminals and stop the voltage. 

Then, pull off the mounting brackets. You cannot remove the positive terminal first because it causes voltage shocks. 

Locate the VGT solenoid quickly when you know its mounting spot, use a socket, and adjust it on an 8mm bolt. 

You can rotate the socket and unfasten this retaining screw. Hold the mounting bracket and pull it outwards. 

Then, remove it from the solenoid and loosen it from the mounting position. You can remove the old and malfunctioning VGT manually when the power supply of the pickup truck is off. 

You can rotate the O-rings gradually. Also, applying force on the sides of O-rings can loosen them quickly. 

You can easily remove the O-rings on its valve. Furthermore, wipe off the motor oil with a duster. 

Then, install a new VGT solenoid inside the turbine-bearing housing. You can add the mounting bracket and fix it in one specific position. 

It is better to install the electrically working connector, which holds it in a specific position. You can tighten the connector in the mounting hole. 

However, using a wrench is better for tightening the connector and solenoid. You can remove the dust from its topside and check its performance.
