 Maximum weight of BMW X5

In 2011, the company launched its heaviest SUV version of 5370 pounds, equal to 2435 kg and 2.685 US tons.

There is only a difference of 100-200 pounds in consecutive models, but these few hundred pounds tell much about the quality improvement with the passing years in BMW X5.

It is not the same in all the variants, and every year company launches 3 to 4 variants that vary in weight.

In the beginning, the vehicles were lightweight of under 5000 pounds, but they began to rise with the year 2008.

The reason is high-quality materials and installation of high power engine, transmission, and other parts in the SUVs.

Many owners complained about the water leaks into interiors after washing the vehicle, and it was because of cheap quality drain tubes in the sunroof.

Also, some owners complained that its engine failed within few months of use and the transmission fluid leaked around, damaging seal adapters and other connectors.

There were many issues with the SUV engine in the beginning year models, such as engine failure after few months, engine stalling, jerks, and hesitation.

Also, the poor engine’s coolant system resulted in an overheated engine and frustrated owners.

The makers examined all these problems and resolved them using superior materials for the body, high quality, and high power engine and transmission.

All these changes and advancements led to its increased weight with time and years.

Also, the latest versions with plug-in hybrid functionality have a large battery for more electrical mileage, which further adds to the curb weight of the SUV.

Its minimum weight

The BMW X5’s lightest models came in the year 2001, which was only 4500 pounds.

However, these vehicles remained lightweight until the year 2007 and lacked many technologies and safety features.

Moreover, the manufacturers used less powerful engines and cheap metals for constructing the body frame in the early versions.

Typically first-generation models failed to impress owners and had several problems, and in response, the company worked more on its components and upgraded them.

Also, there was no trend of heavy vehicles then, and people liked to avoid huge structures, so the manufacturers did not feel the necessity to make heavy SUVs.

Only a few people were keen on driving on uneven roads and rough paths such as hills, beaches, deserts, and other places.

With time, the term off-road performance gained popularity and is now the biggest demand of the population.

It resulted in increased competition, and the brands started to spend more on the quality and reliability of SUVs, which decreased the use of lightweight vehicles.

The average size of BMW X5

Like other features, the BMW X5 size also increased throughout the years, and now the 2022 version has dimensions 199 x 84 x 74 inches.

It is a mid-sized vehicle, so it should be big enough to accommodate passengers and luggage but not look huge.

The 1999 model is the smallest, with 179 x 70 x 64 inches which you will rarely see.

In the beginning years, there was an increase of 4 to 5 inches, but the increment rate became high from 2014.

However, these tiny changes make large differences in the seating rows and cargo space: The latest versions are more roomy and spacious.

These are appropriately sized for family tours and drive in heavy traffic areas.

Also, its purchase and maintenance cost is less when compared to large vehicles because of their medium size.

The towing capacity of the BMW X5 SUV

BMW X5 is known as the best towing SUV among other vehicles of the same genre.

Its average towing capacity ranges between 6500 to 7000 pounds with a maximum limit of 7250 pounds.

However, some variants have less towing capacity of 6000 pounds because of having a low-power engine.

The 2021 version comes with a class three trailer hitch which increases its potential and stability.

The trailer brakes and strong braking systems help the vehicle to tow enough weight without any damage.

The models having engines above 300 hp and torque above 320 pound-feet are more reliable for this purpose.

BMW X5 2022 has the following towing capacity, varying in different versions:

  • sDrive 40i 3.0L Twin-Turbo V6 engine – 7220 pounds
  • xDrive 40i 3.0L Twin-Turbo V6 engine – 6550 pounds
  • M50i 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V8 engine – 7190 pounds

It can tow normal-sized fishing boat, medium-sized ski boat, and caravan that ranges between 3500 to 4200 pounds.

It can also tow camping trailers and horse trailers that do not weigh more than 7000 pounds.

The payload capacity of BMW X5

It has an average payload capacity of 800 to 950 pounds depending upon the variants, which is comparatively less than others.

From 2019 to 2021, models can not bear more than 850 pounds, while the 2022 version can hold up to 980 pounds.

Anything heavier than 1000 pounds will severely damage the vehicle, so you should be careful while placing cargo or luggage in it.

Few examples of payload capacity of 2020 BMW X5 variants are:

  • sDrive 40i – 820 pounds
  • xDrive 40i – 845 pounds
  • xDrive 50i – 865 pounds
  • M50i – 878 pounds

Few examples of payload capacity of 2022 versions are:

  • sDrive 40i 3.0L engine – 970 pounds
  • xDrive 40i 3.0L engine – 980 pounds
  • M50i 4.4L engine – 990 pounds

GVWR of BMW X5

The combined weight of the vehicle with its all parts assembled, passengers, luggage, equipment, cargo, and fuel is GVWR, and it ranges between 5800 to 6590 pounds.

You can estimate this by adding the curb value and the additional pounds you load in it, including passenger weight.

The latest models have more GVWR while the old versions have less GVWR, so consider this factor before leaving for the trip.
