Here is a list of engines used in different Dodge vehicles, and we will put some light on their interchangeability across other models. You will also find initial prerequisites for a specific model and any modifications you have to do to make it work.
4.7-liter V8
The 4.7 L PowerTech V8 engine is a reliable, compact, fuel-efficient, and rugged option for swap. Chrysler manufactured the engine, and you will find several vehicles from 1999 to 2009.
4.7L V8 are interchangeable between 2002-2007 Ram 1500 and 2000-2007 Dodge Dakota pickup trucks and 2000-2009 Dodge Durango SUV.
You will also find it in other vehicles of Chrysler and Jeep, including Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Commander, and Chrysler Aspen during the same model years.
Before going for a swap, you have to check its compatibility with the transmission installed on your vehicle.
It is feasible with 4-speed automatic and 5-speed automatic and manual transmissions. You can also interchange with its high power options introduced as a part of the engine upgrade.
Moreover, for swapping with the same type of vehicle, you don’t have to do any modifications, and it’s just a drop-in solution.
However, for using the engine for other kinds of vehicles different from yours, you have to do bit modifications in ECM and wiring to use all of its functions.
3.7-liter V6 EKG
The 3.7L V6 engine is a product of Chrysler found in 2002-2012 model vehicles from Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler.
It also belongs to the Powertech family of engines with smaller displacement than 4.7L V8 and has other names like Magnum and EKG.
You will find it in trucks and SUVs from Chrysler and its sub-brands. For example, you can swap it between 2002-2012 Ram 1500 pickup trucks, Jeep Liberty SUV from 2002-2012 models, and Mitsubishi Raider from 2006-2010.
Despite the same engine options in different model years, there can be mechanical changes in-between periods and require modifications for a successful swap.
For example, the crankshaft, its gears, and cam gears are different in 2004-05 models from previous years, and you have to buy a new crankshaft kit and other parts for interchange.
4.7-liter V8 HO engine
It is a high output variant of the 4.7-liter V8 engine with increased power and torque ratings. It has Chrysler as manufacturer and is available in 2002-2008 model years.
You can interchange it between the 2007-2008 model Dodge Ram 1500 pickup and Dakota SUV. Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2002-2004 and 2007-2008 models are other options.
Most of the 4.7L HO engine parts are different from standard 4.7L, including camshaft, connecting rods, cylinder heads, fuel injectors, intake manifold, valves, and ECU programming.
Therefore, you cannot interchange the two engines without modifications, especially in programming to make it work according to your vehicle.
Dodge 426 Hemi engine
Dodge 426 Hemi is a 7.0 L V8 engine with giant size, weight, and excellent power ratings initially designed for racing vehicles.
Its street version available for the general public is available in various Dodge and Plymouth models from 1966 to 1971.
You will find it in Dodge Charger, Challenger, and Coronet cars, while Plymouth models include Satellite, Barracuda, and Road Runner.
It is easy to swap the engine in any of these models without any modifications, and it is mostly a plug-and-play arrangement.
However, there are rare chances to find such an old engine in good condition. Moreover, it requires compatible transmission powerful enough to work with a 426 engine for interchange in later model vehicles.
They introduced an updated version of the 426 Hemi in the 2012 Charger Redline.
Since then, it has been available and has a power rating of 580-600 hp. It is an option for interchange for racing enthusiasts.
5.7 L Hemi
The 5.7L Hemi V8 engine is one of the most popular options amongst Dodge engines from 2003-onwards.
In 2009, Chrysler upgraded it with advanced features like VCT, revised cylinder heads, and intake manifold designs.
Its interchange options are 2003-onwards Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup trucks, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Dodge Charger from 2005-onwards.
However, the 2003-2008 models have shorter cylinder heads than later models and require modification for interchange.
2009-2012 models have redesigned cylinder heads, front covers, and composite intake manifold and are not compatible with earlier variants for swap.
6.1 L Hemi
It is a version of the Hemi engine with a larger displacement than 5.7L with more power and torque.
It is compatible with vehicles including Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, Chrysler 300C, and Dodge Challenger between 2005-2010 models.
These engines don’t have a multi-displacement system as in the 2009-present model 5.7L.
You can interchange any two engine variants without any modifications as all of them are identical in design and available features for SUVs, cars, and pickup trucks.
6.2 L Hellcat/Demon
It is a version of the Hemi engine with 6.2L displacement and a supercharger installed.
It is available in 2 variants: Hellcat, which has 700-710 hp, and a more potent model known as Demon, which has 800-810 hp from 2015 to 2022.
You can interchange them with the special racing editions of the vehicles like Challenger, Charger, and Durango from the 2015-2021 models.
However, it will be challenging to install them in general cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks because of the immense load they put on the transmission system.
6.4-liter V8
Chrysler 6.4L V8 engine is a powerful engine based on the 5.7L V8 platform and is available in various 2011-present model vehicles.
Due to its displacement measurement, it has other names like 6.4 Apache and 392 Hemi. You can interchange it between the 2011-2012 models Dodge Charger and Challenger having the same engine.
However, it is not compatible with later models as it has different displacement heads and pistons and has MDS technology.
You can also interchange 2009-present 5.7L with 6.4L V8 by removing EGR and using timing cover and water pumps from the original 5.7L.
Moreover, You will also have to reuse the wiring harness to make it work on the replaced engine.
2.2-2.5L I4
2.2 and 2.5L I4 engines are available in some Dodge and Chrysler vehicles from 1981 to 1995.
You will find them in several variants with features like carbureted, single port, and multi-port fuel injections.
You can interchange them in vehicles like Dodge Daytona, and Chrysler Phantom from 1981 to 1995.
However, it has 4 Turbo I, II, III, and IV variants with turbocharged features.
You should check for the compatibility of ECU and other specifications of 2.2 and 2.5L Inline 4-cylinder engines before swapping.
3.9-liter V6
As a base motor, the 3.9-liter V6 engine is available in 1987-2000 model Dakota and Ram 1500 pickup trucks.
In addition, you can interchange it between 1988-1991, 1992-1996, and 1997-2001 models of the vehicles mentioned above.
The significant differences include the fuel injection in all 3 variants. Earlier models also have EGR, but you can remove it while swapping the engine with a few modifications.
5.2 L V8
The 5.2L Magnum V8 is an engine option for vehicles like Dakota, Ram, Durango, and Jeep Grand Cherokee from the 1992 to 2002 models.
Besides interchange with the 5.2L V8 from these models, you can swap it with other engine options like 5.7L V8 and 5.9L V8.
You have to do a few modifications like neutral flexplate, torque converter, and ECU replacement. All other wiring and sensors are similar, and you can swap them.
You can also use the engine control module by reflashing it or using aftermarket tuners to adopt the fuel requirements of the new engine.
5.9 L V8
5.9 L V8 is similar in design to the 5.2L V8 magnum and is available in 1992-2003 vehicles. You can interchange it within these model years without much modification.
You can swap it with a 5.2L V8 engine as both have identical designs except the balancer.
You will need a no-weight balanced flexplate, torque converter, and ECU from the source engine to make it work properly.
You should also check for any head and block design differences within the model years as a part of design change by the manufacturer to increase engine power.
