Why Does My RV Keep Tripping GFCI Electrical Outlets?

Why Does My RV Keep Tripping GFCI Electrical Outlets?

In the case of recreation vehicles, cord-based or receptacle-type ground fault circuit interrupters use for safety against any electrical hazards.

GFCI is a purpose-built fast safety device or appliance to ensure optimum safety for the overall electrical system installed in an RV.

Why Does My RV Keep Tripping GFCI Electrical Outlets? GFCI tripping on RV electrical outlets can be due to poor ground of RV. The grave imbalance between the two wires is the hot and neutral wires. In addition, moisture entrapped into plugs, worn-out wiring, and your GFCI electrical outlet can also be faulty or incompatible with the circuit operating electrical system of your RV.

You first need to improve the grounding of an electrical circuit in your RV. Second, efficient procedures must be in place to prevent and eliminate moisture entrapped inside plugs that link various portions of the electric conductor.

Why Does My RV Keep Tripping GFCI Electrical Outlets?

Whenever electric current breaks this low resistance path and makes its way to the ground, GFCI comes into play and breaks the circuit by interrupting the current supply further to avoid damage.

It happens in a matter of few milliseconds. Nowadays, there are some complaints about frequent tripping of GFCI electrical outlets. This problem may arise due to many reasons.

These problems can lead to severe injuries to a person run an RV and can cause immense damage to property, especially RV itself and the place where it is parked.

You require an hour is to get these issues resolved beforehand to have the safety of not your RV but also your health.

Poor Grounding at RV and Resultant Leakage of Current to the Ground

The imbalanced flow of current often leads to leakage and tripping. In such circumstances, both neutral and hot wires associated with your circuit will have a grave difference in current flow.

This difference may, later on, indicate by the Ground fault circuit interrupter. As soon the difference between electrical is detected, GFCI trips down circuit avoid the further flow of current to ground.

The flow of current to the ground is also due to the poor resistance of the grounding wire.

It offers no resistance to the imbalanced flow of current from the circuit. As a result, current starts flowing towards the ground, which may cause significant damage to health and property.

Avoid putting one GFCI to another in series because it can monitor and measure the current flow difference on the device neutral side and hot side of an electrical outlet.

Worn out Wiring System

The conductivity of the electrical conductor intended for smooth current passage to an electrical device is often affected by worn-out wire.

Due to excessive operational activity of RV, the wiring of the electrical system becomes worn out. This state of wiring creates an imbalance in current flow.

The unbalanced current flow directs towards the ground and results in frequent tripping of ground fault circuit interrupter. This worn-out wiring with poor grounding is a recipe for disaster.

Furthermore, get the matter of faulty wiring resolved at the earliest to avoid frequent tripping.

Then, get your ground fault circuit interrupter checked or have its proper testing at some workshop dealing in electrical troubleshooting of RVs.

You can replace the GFCI with the new one, but you should disconnect the shoreline cord. Connect the all-white cable and black harness after removal. You have to make a difference by labeling the downstream and incoming conductors.

Moisture Entrapped Inside the plug-in System of RV Electrical System

Humidity and cold weather have a negative influence on the circuit and batteries of your RV trailer.

As a result, having an outlet on the exterior of your vehicle, where moisture can also entrap due to damage to the cover, so you must inspect.

Lifting the cables or connections of the outer outlet and inspect the issue. In this way, you can easily find out the problem and its location.

You have to dry out the outlet overnight or replace the device with a new one.

Even after drying, there may be a chance of corrosion, so hire an expert mechanic who figure out the problem with ease.

Damaged Insulation

GFCI lifespan or its working capacity is around 5 to 20 years. Therefore, you should inspect and figure out the problem and resolve this issue.

GFCI tripping may sometimes occur due to worn-out or damaged insulation. It is essential to protect the leakage from any source. Any damage to it enhance that issue more.

You can use a trick to resolve the moisture entrapment issue by cover the outer switch box with the silicone sealant.

After, you install the repceptical caulk around it and the trim plate. This method helps out to prevent moisture entrapment.

Power Converter Cause GFCI Tripping

If your RV power converter and GFCI capacity are different, this imbalance can develop a tripping issue.

It can lead to blown out the fuse or trigger the circuit breaker and power supply cut off.

Rusting of Generator Grounded Wire

Due to moisture or water intrusion in rainy days or summer condition rusting appear on the generator grounded wire.

You have to clean it properly and replace the connection with a new one.

Correct Use of GFCI

GFCI electrical outlet commonly used in the wet areas including outside areas, kitchen, washing area, and others. The National Electrical Code sets the proper guidelines and recommendations to use and install that outlet source.

You have to plug in the appliances that are compatible with it. Electronic devices like a refrigerator, smoke detector or heater, and fluorescent light are useless to plug in with GFCI.

It is unnecessary to utilize it for such kinds of items. Leakage occurs when you connect certain appliances with it. It increases the load that leads to tripping.

How to confirm GFCI tripping of RV electrical outlets?

GFCI disconnects all the power supply that reaches the electrical outlet if any failure or damage occurs.

For this purpose, you should regularly examine and inspect the outlet working and its condition.

Plug-in Circuit Tester

A Plug-in circuit tester is a reliable, cost-effective device that diagnoses the electrical outlet problem. This device checks if the outlet provides the required voltage to the plugged items.

Through this, an expert technician or you can figure out where the issue presents. Then, you can easily buy it from the local hardware store.

First, you have to test all the voltage and electrical outlets and each receptacle inside and park pedestals.

Most of the service stations in their tool kit have that gadget.

Greenlee Polarity Tester Cube

The Greenlee polarity tester cube is the best tool for checking your RV electrical outlet’s polarity issue and bad ground.

It is best to examine all the outlets, in this way you will get the problem. 120V AC grounded outlets are checked and tested by the polarity tester cube.

Hot Skin Test

RV shore power supply of the ground wire disrupted due to some consequence. It can lead to minor leakage of current that spread throughout the RV. A hot skin test can detect the stray voltage or current of the electrical outlet.
